The advantages of lithium LiFePo4 batteries are obvious when designing a full off grid system. Compared to AGM/Lead Acid batteries of the same rated capacity, a LiFePo4 battery has at least 80% more usable capacity. For example, a 100Ahr AGM battery will only yield 50Ahr of power before the voltage generally will drop under 12V and further discharge risks damaging the battery. However, a 100Ahr LiFePo4 battery will yield up to 80 or 90Ahr of power whilst retaining a constant voltage in excess of 12V and at no risk to the battery.
There is a multitude of LiFePo4 batteries on the market at a huge range of prices. The long-term performance of many of these batteries remains unproven.
At OffGrid RV WA, we have a strong preference to use batteries from manufacturers/suppliers that we know and trust, such as EXOTRONIC, ATG, RENOGY, SUPCELION and ALLSPARK. We also prefer to use batteries that have inbuilt Bluetooth, as this enables each battery to be individually monitored directly via Bluetooth which enables any problems within a battery to be seen at cell level. In addition, inbuilt safety features, BMS protection against overcharging, water resistance & durability against vibration plus active cell balancing are all important features when choosing the right battery for your Offgrid system.
